SPECIAL NOTE:
What the Memento Mori Conversations are NOT:
- Memento Mori is Latin for “Remember you will die”, “Remember that you must die” or “Remember to die”. The phrase may sound ghoulish, but it’s purpose is not to depress, but rather to befriend the truth: We Will All Die. It is a reminder of the presence of death which follows us all and to allow our growing comfort with this fact to uplift and highlight the preciousness of our living moments.
- You can learn more about the phrase Memento Mori, it’s origins and/or Memento Mori art here:

- There are many, many articles and blogs on the topic; you may wish to research it further or simply ponder the concept yourself.
What are the Memento Mori Conversations?
- The Memento Mori Conversations were birthed from the unexpectedly powerful response to Maya’s sermon: Memento Mori; Could Befriending Death Change the World? So many people expressed - and have continued to share with Maya - a deep desire to discuss this often-feared subject, and wished for a space to consider it further. The Conversations are a welcome-space for this topic!
- The Memento Mori conversations are gentle, open discussions on many subjects about and around Death & Dying, and all things related.
Why might you attend the Memento Mori Conversations?
- You just want to listen
- You are curious to share your thoughts, concerns, experience and/or wisdom on the topics of Death & Dying
- You have questions about death & dying, the physical/emotional/spiritual experience of the process of dying, hospice care, sudden death, religion and death, will-making and other legal documents related to death and dying, handling the fear/pain/grief associated with death/dying/loss
- You would like to explore ways of discussing this topic with family members,
- You are curious about “after-life”, are exploring facing fears, or any other subject surrounding death and dying
- You have no other place in which to discuss death and dying freely
- You yourself or a loved one is facing death and your curiosity/fear/courage/interest is piqued
- You would like to check out Memento Mori Conversations for a friend or loved one
- You just wonder what on Earth a Memento Mori Conversation might be like!
What will the Memento Mori Conversations be about?
- Openly discussing Death & Dying in our “Death Phobic” society
- Sharing our fears, joys, tears, laughter around this very vibrant topic
- Learning and sharing information on local death-related support organizations
- Considering will-making, end-of-life letter-writing, Do-Not-Resuscitate orders (DNR’s) and other legalities
- The spirituality of death & dying – yours and those from around the world
- Interesting facts and figures; who what and why do we fear death?
- Is it possible to face death without fear, and if so, how might we move toward this?
- Various topics offered by visiting facilitators
- Memento Mori art & writings
- Poems – old and new; share yours or those that move you
- Whatever YOU want to discuss around death and dying
What else might take place at the Memento Mori Conversations?
- Safe, confidential environment in which to share
- Freedom to participate or just sit quietly and listen
- Easy, guided relaxation
- Snacks, in locations that allow eating and drinking
- New friend-making
- Resource sharing
- Poem or art making
- Easy-to-learn soothing somatic healing exercises
- Sharing of whatever sort participants choose
- Ways to honor and celebrate our ancestors
- Grief work and memory-keeping tools
Are the Memento Mori Conversations facilitated?
- Yes. The Memento Mori Conversations will be lightly facilitated by Maya (you can GO HERE for a bit about Maya) and/or guest facilitators.
- Facilitators are persons who are trained or work in the greater arena of Death and Dying. From hospice nurse to funeral parlor director, spiritual advisor to medical doctor, death shaman to grief and loss counselor and more, a facilitator will be present at each Memento Mori Conversation.
- Facilitators will open topics, and gently guide and hold compassionate space for attendees who choose courageously to be share in or listen to conversations on this universally relevant subject.
- BUT – it is YOU who bring the substance of the Memento Mori Conversations!
Who can attend the Memento Mori Conversations?
- EVERYONE interested in gentle, inclusive, open-hearted discussions of this universal topic is invited to attend the Memento Mori Conversations!
- Attention to age-specific needs (if minors are present) and those needing other types of assistance (wheelchair access, differently abled visual or auditory needs) will be honored whenever possible. (Please reach out to Maya to discuss your needs so we may do our best to prepare!)
What do I need to do to prepare for participating in a Memento Mori Conversation?
- You do not need to do anything other than show up at a Memento Mori Conversation!
- However, spending some time considering death related topics, or sourcing your own deep feelings around death and dying, may deepen your experience of the Memento Mori Conversations
When and where do the Memento Mori Conversations take place?
- We have closed our in-person meetings in Maine (Maya is moving back to Canada!), but Memento Mori Conversations continue to take place on Zoom
- You may email [email protected] for the recurring zoom link.
Is there a cost to attend Memento Mori Conversations?
- There is no mandatory cost to attend Memento Mori Conversations.
- If you feel moved to do so, small donations of any amount are much appreciated and assist in covering costs for facilitators and may also be donated to death-positive causes.
- The best donation you can make is simply to share Memento Mori Conversations with others!
SPECIAL NOTE:
What the Memento Mori Conversations are NOT:
- Please Note; the Memento Mori Conversations are NOT a Grief Support group. Though grief at any Memento Mori Conversations is most welcome (tissues always provided!), the Memento Mori Conversations are not designed specifically to support your grieving. Please reach out to Maya ([email protected] ) if you are experiencing intense grief and would like to have support in this. You may schedule a session with Maya OR request referral to other grief support programs.
- While you may mention your death-related services at Memento Mori Conversations, this is a space of confidential sharing and as such is not the place for making advertising pitches! (You may share your information, or interest in co-facilitating, with Maya to be included in our list of resources; email [email protected] -- thank you for your understanding.)
